“Tackle What You Are Avoiding” is the title of Chapter 4 of my book. At any given time, I think each one of us is avoiding something! I like doing a “check in” with myself from time to time to help me identify what I’m dodging in life. I had to laugh the other day when my best friend commented on the very first photo I posted on my Instagram account. It is a picture of me swimming in Croatia. I love this photo because it reminds me of how calm and free I felt in that moment (vacation state of mind). My friend noted that I looked so graceful, until she remembered that under the water I was doing the dog-paddle! Yes, I am a dog-paddle champion. Although I’ve lived near the water most of my life, I can barely swim. Since the water here is freezing and I hate public pools, I’ve never felt that motivated to do anything about it. I’m actually still not motivated (avoiding?). The only time this becomes an issue is when I travel. Our family was in Guadeloupe this winter and my husband and the boys were having so much fun snorkeling. I am usually the one on the beach, guarding the bags and wallets and reading. I take little dips, but I avoid anything beyond that. I knew I was missing out! This time I finally bought myself a snorkelling vest and ventured out to the reef with them. Certainly, when it comes to water, throwing your fears aside recklessly and diving in over your head is not the solution. With my safety net in place though, I was able to enjoy myself and finally participate. I’m not sure why I waited so long to do this, but I’m glad I finally did. Do you have a list of things you are avoiding?
